Haplofield

Move through 10,673 people who lived up to 185,000 years ago. Turn one dial, and the DNA they share sorts them into families.

A space you can move through, made of 10,673 people who lived up to 185,000 years ago — each placed where they were found and when they lived, dated on average to within ±87 years.

One dial sets how much DNA two people must share to count as kin. Turn it, and the stretches of DNA they inherited from the same ancestors — their haplotypes — light the space up into hundreds of families.

We joined two published datasets, cut them at every threshold, and built the space you can enter.
